• Establish of realistic goals for pain management
• Identify and select patients with pain for consideration of an opioid trial
• Maximizing efficacy while minimizing the risks of opioid therapy
• Counsel patients and caregivers about use, misuse, abuse, diversion, and overdose
• Educate patients about the safe storage and disposal of opioids
• Identify patients for whom non-pharmacologic strategies and interventional therapies may provide great relief or reduce the risk of opioid abuse
